Can you name some of the winning cities that has got the European Green Capital Award (EGCA)? I knew a Spanish city, Vitoria-Gasteiz.
I think it is interesting to know about the background of this award.
On 15 May 2006 in Tallin, Estonia, the concept of this Award was conceived by initiative taken by cities with a green vision,15 European cities (Tallin, Helsinki, Riga, Vinius, Warsaw, Madrid, Ljubljana, Prague, Vienna, Kiel (Germany), Kotka (Finland), Dartford, Tartu and Glasgow) and the Association of Estonian cities.
The EGCA reward cities which are making efforts to improve the urban environment and move towards healthier and sustainable living areas. The award will enable cities to inspire each other and share best practices.
Every year the competition is open to EU Member States and Candidate Countries (FYROM, Iceland, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey); Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The cities, from these countries, which have more than 100,000 inhabitants (if it is not, it can participate the largest city in the country) can apply for the award.
Actually, it has expired the deadline for the EGCA 2017 competition, on 2017 12 cities have entered on the competition and the selection of a city to be awarded will be assessed on the basis of twelve environmental indicator areas.

¿Puedes nombrar alguna de las ciudades ganadoras que han obtenido el Premio de Capital Verde Europea? Sé de una ciudad española, Vitoria-Gasteiz.
Creo que es interesante saber un poco más sobre el comienzo y el funcionamiento de este premio.
El 15 de Mayo del 2006 en Tallín, Estonia, se creó este premio por iniciativa de 15 ciudades europeas (Tallín, Helsinki, Riga, Vilna, Varsovia, Madrid, Liubliana, Praga, Viena, Kiel (Alemania), Kotka (Finlandia), Dartford, Tartu y Glasgow) y la Asociación de ciudades de Estonia.
El galardón premia a las ciudades que estan haciendo esfuerzos para mejorar el medio urbano y están creando entornos saludables y sostenibles para vivir. Este premio permitirá a las ciudades a inspirarse entre ellas y compartir buenas prácticas.
Cada año la competición esta abierta a miembros de la UE y países candidatos (FYROM, Islandia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turquía); Liechtenstein, Noruega y Suecia. Las ciudades, de estos países, que tienen más de 100.000 habitants (si no los tienen, puede participar la ciudad más grande del país) puden presentarse para optar al premio.
Actualmente, ha terminado el plazo para la competición en 2017, año en el que 12 ciudades han entrado en la competición y la selección de la ciudad ganadora será en base a 12 indicadores mediambientales.
